Ophthalmologists discuss new multifocal intraocular lenses that reduce night vision flash One of the more uncomfortable the operated patients suffering from myopia and cataract is the vision of halos or flares at night. Now, a new multifocal contact lenses could significantly reduce the view of these reflections. These lenses are being presented this weekend at the Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute of Oviedo, for several international conferences.

Experts from France, Italy, Belgium and Portugal will discuss the benefits of these lenses when it is necessary to remove the lens, as in cataract surgery or in patients with more than fifty years who wish to dispense with the glasses. In these cases intervention is carried out only if in addition to eyestrain match other refractive errors such as farsightedness , nearsightedness or Presbyopia.

During the meeting, the team of Prof. Luis Fernández-Vega will present preliminary results after making fifty cases in his institute. “Almost one hundred percent of patients achieved good vision not only of distance but also in intermediate and near distances. The flashes are not removed completely, but improved considerably and patients reported high satisfaction in the questionnaires completed,” he said.

Lenses at night to produce these flashes have carved a micro step. In these conventional micro step are slightly separated, but the latter has reduced the area of separation and therefore the possibility of reflections. The new lens material is also different, it’s acrylic and therefore more biocompatible and easy to implement.

Despite the good early results, the goal is to make a new clinical trial to endorse the conclusions. The Institute Fernández-Vega will coordinate this study with other ophthalmology centers.
