Tips on How to Select a Fitness Gym

Just deciding to get fit or trying to maintain a regular exercise or workout schedule can be enough of a daunting task. There are so many programs available now, from yoga to strength training, and everything possible in between, and all can be done either at home or in a gym. Choosing a gym and a fitness program will depend on a few important factors.

Consider your fitness level and be realistic. Things like body composition and flexibility levels need to be taken into consideration. A doctor should be consulted before you begin any exercise program, especially if you have not been physically active for a given amount of time. Once you have determined the level of fitness that you are comfortably able achieve, then set one or even a few key goals. Perhaps one goal would be to tone up or lose those last 10 to 15 pounds, or maybe you want to take part in a benefit walk with friends or co-workers. Whatever the goals may be, they will help you stay focused and motivated.

You should think about the kind of physical activities you really enjoy. If you simply pick things that you think are easy, or like because they are trendy, you may soon find yourself finding excuses as to why you don’t want to go to the gym after all. For example if you like to dance, then look for an exercise class that offers aerobics which includes dance moves. If you are a social person then go shopping for a health club or a gym membership as opposed to exercising alone at home. Also, don’t join a club that has more to offer than you will realistically use or do. For example, if you have no love of a steam bath, then why join a gym that offers sauna privileges?

Whether you choose to exercise at home or at a gym, be sure to maintain variety in your routine. This will help to prevent overuse or injury to a specific joint or group of muscles. It will also help to prevent boredom resulting from a repetitive exercise routine.

If it looks like a gym or health club is the way you want to go, then you should consider the location. Depending on what time of day you plan to exercise and where it will fit into you daily/weekly schedule, you may want to have your gym be handy to home, or on your route to work. Also be sure to visit the gym you are considering at the time of day you plan to be there to do your workout. If you dislike crowds or prefer a large group to workout with, this will give you a heads up as to how busy the place is going to be when you plan on being there. When you visit, check the locker rooms to see if the showers are fresh and clean and look well maintained, or do they look like something from a horror movie?

You should also consider your financial status. Sometimes home gym equipment can be pricey as can memberships in health clubs. Don’t join a gym to benefit your health then spend each day stressing out about how to come up with next month’s fees. Instead, if the dues are just too expensive, check your local city or municipality recreation department. Many times they will have regular exercise programs offered at a much more affordable rate, and with just as good of a variety of programs as your local gym.

Once you are involved in a regular exercise routine, don’t forget that when you have achieved the goals you set for yourself, set new ones based on your new fitness level. This way you will always feel motivated and continue to grow physically and emotionally.

Responding to a Major Environmental Issue as a Chef

There are many environmental issues that concern everyone nowadays. Many of these problems are basically caused by human activities. Unfortunately, there are some things that you cannot altogether avoid doing. For instance, you cannot totally avoid driving your car. You cannot altogether cease using water or energy. However, there are some things that you can do in order to reduce potential environmental threats. You can deal with one major environmental issue after another. What is important is that you know these problems.

A Chef’s Major Environmental Issue

In truth, all environmental worries concern chefs. No major environmental issue is more important than the others. Of course, there are some problems that probably affect chefs more than others, but this does not change the fact that chefs need to be concern about the environment. They need to do their part in ensuring environmental health.

There are so many problems that concern you as a chef. Of course, all of these problems concern everyone. Some of these problems include global warming, bizarre and erratic climate changes, genetic erosion, habitat destruction, species extinction, coral bleaching, whaling, energy conservation, efficient use of energy, renewable energy, commercialization of renewable energy, genetically engineered pollution, irrigation, meat production, overgrazing, desertification, land pollution, soil erosion, soil conservation, soil contamination, nuclear power, pollution and all its kinds, ozone depletion, natural resources depletion, blast fishing, bottom trawling, illegal logging, deforestation, waste disposal and burials.

No major environmental issue demands more attention than the others. All of these things are your concern. Of course, as a chef, you can only do so much. You can only respond and correct those that are within your immediate control.

Responding to One Major Environmental Issue after Another

The first thing that you have to do in order to respond to environmental problems is to decide to go green. It may seem daunting because this will require lifestyle modifications, but you will eventually adapt to the changes. To make it easier for you, you can start with the simplest things first.

For instance, you can start with changing your light. Use fluorescent bulbs in your kitchen and at home. If everyone will simply choose to change his or her bulbs, just imagine the impact this would create on a major environmental issue. This would significantly reduce pollution. If you have a restaurant, you can still use fluorescent bulbs to create a warm atmosphere.

There are also several things that you can do in the kitchen in order to help resolve a major environmental issue – energy and water wastage. Adopt these activities and make them a habit. You will certainly save water if you will forego rinsing the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher. You will save gallons of water by avoiding rinsing. You will also save a lot of time and energy. As a chef, you call the shots. If you want to help save the environment, then adopt this practice.

Another way to respond to this major environmental issue is to avoid unnecessary kitchen activities like pre-heating the oven. Unless, you are going to bake breads or pastries, you should avoid pre-heating the oven. You can just simply turn it on when you place the dish inside. You will also save energy if you will avoid opening the oven’s door every time you check the dish or the food. It is advisable, therefore, to equip your kitchen with an oven with a window, so you can always just peer through the window whenever you have to check the food.

If you are in charge of menu planning, perhaps you should create a vegetarian day where you will obviously only serve vegetarian meals or dishes. This is a great way to conserve water. Imagine how many gallons of water are needed in order to produce a pound of beef. You basically need about 2,000 gallons of water for one pound. Imagine how much water you would save by devoting one day to vegetables.

Now if you have to purchase vegetables, you should definitely go organic. You will certainly address more than one major environmental issue if you choose to go organic with your purchases. It is also advisable to buy from the local market. Not only will you support the economy but you will also help in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

There are still so many things that you can do as a chef in order to help improve the environment. The little things you do in order to respond to a major environmental issue matter.

Exercises to Lose Weight Don’t Have to Be Hard — Here are some good suggestions

Exercises to lose weight are every bit as important as following a healthy, reduced calorie diet. Many times however, our schedules are so hectic that it is hard to fit in the recommended full hour every day for exercise. So are there easy exercises to lose weight that do not take an hour to do every day, yet provide real results? Yes, there are exercises out there that are easy to do, and do not take a lot of time and really work!

There are basically two types of exercises, strength training and aerobic exercise. All exercises fall within the range of one of these types and each type of exercise works differently with the body to contribute to overall weight loss and toning. Aerobic exercises burn fat and calories while strength training tones the body while increasing the speed of your resting metabolic rate. It is important to fit both types of exercises into your work out routines for optimal weight loss.

Exercises to lose weight quickly contain both aspects of exercises in one. Exercises such as step aerobics are great way to increase your heart beat (aerobic activity) while toning your body. Step aerobics target trouble areas such as legs hips and thighs and can burn up to 800 calories in an hour. This means that even if you do as little as one twenty minute session per day, every other day, and you can burn over 1000 calories per week all while gaining muscle.

Walking is another excellent way to burn calories while toning your lower body. Walking can burn up to 500 calories per hour (depending on how fast you are going) and tones the calves, hips and buttocks muscles. Add a deliberate arm movement while walking and you can also help to tone your upper body.

If you can not find ways of exercising in traditional ways because you are stuck in an office all day, doing office exercises to lose weight can help as well. Take a five or ten minute break a couple of times per day and climb up and down office steps non-stop. You will increase your heart rate while adding muscle tone to your lower body. Or, try standing in front of a chair without wheels and place your arms behind you grabbing on to the arms of the chair. “Dip” your body downward until you are almost setting in the chair and use your body weight to push yourself back up. This is a great way of toning your upper body while in your cubical or office.

There are plenty of ways to find exercises to lose weight that do not create a hassle in your every day life. If you constantly strive to find new ways to fit even small amounts of exercise into your routine, you will almost definitely see results within just a few short weeks. Not only will you start to look better, you will find that you have more energy and you will feel healthier too!

Is your Diet Plan Hurting your Kids?

In 2001, a study showed that mothers’ eating habits significantly influence how their daughters eat. Even more than anything these mothers do to directly control the eating behavior of their daughters.
If that’s true, have you ever wondered how your dieting behavior affects your kids?
Before you choose a new diet plan, here are some things you might want to do for your kids’ sakes as well as your own:
1. Avoid perfect diets.
You’re not perfect. Nobody is.
If you choose a diet that requires perfect eating behavior, you’re setting yourself up for failure. And you’ll probably beat yourself up when you inevitably cheat – and cheat big.
If you don’t set realistic standards for yourself, your kids may think they have to meet impossible standards of perfection, too.
Isn’t it better to let them see you diet realistically? Show them how you can lose weight, but still handle social occasions like parties and eating out with friends.
Show them how you can work in a sweet treat now and then without acting like it’s a character flaw.
Give yourself permission to be human. For your benefit and for theirs.
2. Avoid crash diets.
You already know it’s unhealthy to lose more than 1 or 2 pounds a week. So don’t do it.
You wouldn’t want your kids to engage in risky or unhealthy behavior. You shouldn’t, either.
Unless your doctor advises you to lose weight more quickly, stick to a diet plan that helps you to lose weight gradually.
3. Don’t eliminate any food groups when you’re dieting.
You need proper nutrition and so do your kids. So make sure all of you eat a balanced diet with enough choices from all the food groups. That way, all of you will stay strong and healthy.
Losing weight doesn’t depend on cutting out certain foods or food groups. It’s just a matter of cutting calories. Wisely.
Anyone who tells you anything different is misinformed or lying. It’s calories. Period.
4. Set a sensible weight loss target for yourself.
You don’t want your kids to look like they’re anorexic. Neither should you.
It’s not healthy. And it’s not attractive, either.
Besides, we all know that magazines touch up those celebrity photos so our favorite stars look perfect. It’s fantasy. It’s illusion. It’s not real.
So get real. Diet down to a healthy target weight, then stop. There’s no need to go to some fashion extreme. You wouldn’t want your kids to do it, would you?
5. Avoid yo-yo dieting.
If you’re jumping from one diet to another with no real success or if your weight fluctuates wildly, then you’re choosing the wrong diet plans. Skip the extreme diets that torture you until you break.
You need to choose something you can live with so you can lose the weight once and for all.
Does that mean you’ll never gain an extra pound or two?
Of course not. But if you choose a realistic diet plan, you’ll discover how to handle minor setbacks so they don’t become major problems.
At the same time, you’ll show your kids how to cope with weight loss in a healthier, less frustrating way in case they ever face the same problem as adults.
Show your kids that dieting doesn’t have to be torture. That it doesn’t have to be unhealthy. That you don’t have to become an emotional basket case.
Show them that you can have a life and still enjoy it-even when you’re losing weight.
It’s better for you. And it’s better for them.
6. Don’t overreact if you cheat on your diet.
You don’t want your kids to obsess over body image. And you certainly don’t want them to have their entire self-image wrapped up in what they eat, do you?
Then don’t do it to yourself.
It’s easy to let a diet consume your life. Every conversation, every thought, every action seems to be about food and calories and fat grams and whatever else you’re counting on your diet plan.
Yes, you have to become more aware of what you eat when you want to lose weight. But do yourself and everyone around you a favor.
Keep it in perspective. Plan your meals. Then live your life.
If you deviate from the plan every once in a while, oh well. That’s life. Move on.
If you choose a realistic diet plan, it won’t be the end of the world. And you’ll still reach your weight loss goals.
Every diet plan should allow for those times when you need to indulge.
That way, you’re more likely to succeed. And everyone around you will be happier if you’re not obsessed with your diet.
Plus your kids may learn to keep their body image in perspective, too.
7. Get your doctor’s approval before you start any new diet plan.
This is probably the best thing you can do for your kids. Show them how to be sensible and how to take proper care of their health. Show them by taking care of your health.
It’s the best gift you can give them.

Corporate Health Promotion Program Trends

A employee health promotion initiative in the worksite can be designed to help mitigate an employee’s health care needs and ensure that work goals are healthful and in balance.

A worksite wellness program can’t fix something as profound as Lupus, but it can help the worker to better manage the stress and physical needs that could accompany such an disease. Many females who suffer from premenstrual headaches frequently find themselves switching from one type of birth control prescription to another, but often times, a corporate wellness program can help identify methods to better prevent such headaches without modifying prescriptions.

Health and wellness products are not usually promoted in a workplace health promotion program, although they are not discouraged. Employee health promotion programs are most frequently used to help staff members identify simple ways to enhance their health and well-being , through improving nutrition and adding routine exercise.

A qualitycorporate health promotion initiative will also tailor personal activities, meal plans or recommendations to each person depending on their own specific needs. The activity level for an individual recovering from a knee replacement surgery will look considerably  different than the exercise routine for a normal functioning person. Workplace health promotion will be unique.

A lot of businesses find that offering an occasional worksite massage is adequate to promote a good spirit of workmanship in the workplace . It’s indisputable that a massage is refreshing, but studies have found that a good deep tissue massage generally promotes good circulation, increased brain activity and enhances alertness for a few hours, all good factors in the workplace .

A workplace wellness program isn’t a guaranteed way to get all employees on the same page as far as their health and well-being , but it’s a step in the right direction. When more and more organizations promote wellness in the worksite it becomes the norm and employees are more likely to follow suit by taking responsibility for their own health and wellness by making good long-term choices .
